Air Quality Monitoring

Howe Sound Pulp and Paper maintains an ambient air monitoring station 10 km south of the mill (close to the Langdale Ferry Terminal). This station measures the concentrations in the local atmosphere of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2),  particulate matter smaller than 10 microns in size (PM10) and total reduced sulphur (TRS - the odorous gases created in the Kraft process). This data is then sent by modem to the mill and to the Ministry of Environment.

To access current air quality data at Langdale, follow this link to the Ministry of Environment website http://www.bcairquality.ca

When you get to that website, you'll see a small B.C. map on the right-hand corner of the page, called "What's the Air Like Today?"

* Click on the map to enlarge it.

* By clicking on the map, the map will zoom to the location you've chosen and display nearby monitoring stations.

* When you click on a monitoring station, you'll get the current air quality readings and/or meteorological readings.

 Specifically, to find Langdale Elementary:

* Click on the inset map for Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. That will take you to closer-range maps, which include the Langdale Elementary monitoring station and its air quality information.

* Click on Langdale Elementary to get current readings.

* Click on any of those readings to get a graph for the last 24 hours.
