TMP
  THERMO-MECHANICAL PULPING

And away we go!!! These chips are leaving our chip silos. Each species is stored separately until it is time to make paper or pulp. When that time comes, the chips are poured onto a conveyor belt (left), and mixed in whatever combination of species we want. If it is time to make newsprint paper, the first stop for the chips is TMP (Thermo-Mechanical Pulping). Here the chips will be steamed, so that they are soft, and then sent through giant grinders called refiners (middle). These refiners grind the wood into pulp (right) which will be used to make the Newsprint.  This process of separating the wood fibres is the biggest consumption of electrical energy in the mill.  The motors that drive the grinders have 19,000 horsepower each!  Did you know that an average jet engine has 8,000 horsepower?
